This is a recently completed commission. A portrait of the distinguised St John’s College Oxford Professor of Classics, Donald Russell. It was commissioned by past students, colleagues and friends and hangs in the Ioannou Centre for Classical and Byzantine Studies, Oxford.
It was a real pleasure to meet and work with Professor Russell. He was a font of knowledge and kept me entertained while I made drawings and studies in his flat. I undertook a couple of sittings whilst working on the portrait. I may have done a third, but at 97 I didn’t like to impose. I wanted to include some Latin text and was inspired by the works of Hans Holbien who often wrote the sitter’s age in Latin.
I am always happy to receive enquiries about commissions and will consider anything from a pencil drawing to a full length painted portrait.
